Democracies worldwide are in decline as authoritarian regimes become more repressive and new global economic crises strike. This is one of the key findings of the Global State of Democracy (GSoD) report published on 30 November 2022 by our client, International IDEA. Coinciding with the report, International IDEA announced the launch of the Democracy Tracker. Poet Farmer proudly contributed to the realisation of this platform and is responsible for its design and development.

The Drupal-based website rates the democratic performance of 173 countries on five characteristics and 16 sub-characteristics, derived from the Global State of Democracy Indices (GSoDI) framework. It provides a visual overview of monthly trends and allows users to browse country profiles where they can find comprehensive data and analysis on the state of democracy in a given country. The Data Archive allows users to dive deep into all previous reports and events and use filters to find exactly what they need.

We have worked intensively with the team at International IDEA over the past few months to make this possible and we are very proud to be a partner in this important initiative. The need for a platform like this has never been more evident. According to International IDEA’s latest GSoD report, almost half of the 173 countries assessed experience a decline in the attributes of democracy by the end of 2021, ranging from restrictions on freedom of expression to distrust in the legitimacy of elections. This decline comes as elected leaders face unprecedented challenges from Russia’s war in Ukraine, cost-of-living crises, a looming global recession and climate change.

View the platform and check the state of democracy in a country of your choice. The platform has started with 50 countries and the remaining country pages will be added in the near future.
