Tracking the State of Democracy

Democracies across the world are in retreat, while authoritarian regimes are becoming more repressive.

This is one of the key findings of the Global State of Democracy (GsoD) report published on November 30, 2022 by our client, International IDEA. Together with the report International IDEA announced the launch of the Democracy Tracker. Poet Farmer proudly contributed to the realisation of this platform by being responsible for the design and development of the platform.

The Drupal-based website tracks democratic performance of 173 countries covering 5 attributes and 16 sub-attributes derived from the Global State of Democracy Indices (GSoDI) framework. It provides a visual overview of monthly trends through the home page and allows users to browse country profiles where they can find comprehensive data and analysis on the state of democracy of a specific country. The Data Archive gives advanced users the option to do a deep-dive into all past reports and events and use filters to find exactly what they need.

We have been working intensely with the team at International IDEA over the last months to make this happen and we are really proud to be a partner in this important initiative. The need for a platform like this has never been more clear. As of the end of 2021, nearly one half of the 173 countries assessed are experiencing declines in attributes of democracy, ranging from restrictions on freedom of expression to distrust in the legitimacy of elections, according to the latest GSoD report by International IDEA. This decline comes as elected leaders face unprecedented challenges from Russia’s war in Ukraine, cost of living crises, a looming global recession and climate change.

Take a look at the platform and check your country’s state of democracy. Please note that we have begun with approximately 50 core country pages. The remaining country pages are being continuously updated, so watch this space!
